Tabgha: The church of the primacy of Peter. From very ancient times there has been a rock there (it may now be seen inside the church) which was known by the Latin name of Mensa Christi. It is said that on that rock Jesus conferred on Peter the responsibility of being the future head of the church. The Gospel story recounts on this subject how Christ appeared to his disciples for the third time after the Resurrection and how the primacy of Peter was then affirmed. "After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias;...He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep".
