Church
of St. Mary Magdalene: The architectural appearance of this church is decidedly
"Muscovite", due to its seven conspicuous golden onion domes with crosses on
top. The building stands in a pleasant setting, on the western slope of the Mount of
Olives and was built in 1885 by the Czar Alexander 3rd in memory of his mother, Maria
Alexandrovna. The interior houses a good number of paintings, admirable icons and the tomb
of the grandduchess Elisabeth Feodorovna, killed in 1917, during the Russian Revolution.
